What if I've never taken engineering courses?
Students may take Foundational Courses without any prior engineering courses. These students may also take Specialty Courses in the 2015-2016 school year, provided they are concurrently enrolled in at least one Foundational Course. Students who have completed both Foundational Courses may take any specialty course(s) they're interested in. It is suggested that students complete both foundational courses prior to taking specialty courses.
Example -
  • Joe has taken IED in 9th grade and POE in 10th. He may enroll in any and as many engineering classes he likes his 11th grade year. He may take EDD in 12th.
  • Jane has taken IED in 10th grade. She needs to take POE next. She may take AE, CEA, or DE at the same time, but must be enrolled in POE.
  • Jeremy has not taken any engineering courses. He needs to complete foundational courses prior to enrolling in specialty courses. This year, he takes POE and IED. The following year, he takes as many and any specialty courses he thinks interesting.



Why should someone take an engineering course?
Engineering is a high-demand field that routinely tops the charts for average starting salaries (see HERE) and allows "makers" and "doers" to make and do on a professional scale. Engineers make the world go 'round.
Our department is quickly developing a program unlike any other in the state where Bryant students can come see if engineering is a career field they might be interested in pursuing and then support them in developing skills and acquiring knowledge that will aid their pursuit of an engineering, technology, or architecture degree.


Is there a suggested order for specialty courses?
For 10th graders who will complete foundational courses that year, Aerospace is recommended, as Digital Electronics and Civil Engineering & Architecture are intended to be more challenging and math-intensive courses. Engineering Design and Development is for senior completers only.


How do I become a program "completer" in engineering?
To become a program completer, students must complete both Foundational Courses and at least one Specialty Course of their choosing.


Are there any prerequisites?
Math grades of "C" or better are required, along with simultaneous enrollment in a college preparatory math class (10-12). Students need to be at least "at level" in math. Students must maintain "C" averages or better in engineering courses to enroll in further engineering courses.


What if I'm not a big math fan?
While we do insist that a student be at level and passing in math classes, we understand that some students may not have a great passion for the subject. If you have a strong drive to take these courses and work hard, we like to think that we can make the math real to you, and give you a reason to excel and push harder in your math classes, as they will be very necessary for most collegiate studies in our focus areas.


Is concurrent credit available?
Students who are eligible for concurrent credit through UALR may receive a 3hr Introduction to Systems Engineering credit from UALR with completion of IED and POE. Tuition is $50. Students must apply through UALR and meet ACT score requirements, etc... as they must for any concurrent credit course offering from UALR.
Students may be eligible for additional credit in the PLTW network of partner universities. Arkansas Tech, for instance, will award 6hrs to program completers in good standing upon enrollment.


Is there a fee?
Yes, there is a $10 material fee for each engineering class enrollment.


What is H.E.A.T.?
H.E.A.T. (Hornet Engineering And Technology) is Bryant Hornet Engineering's officially recognized student organization. It was formed in the fall of 2013, made significant strides in its first year and has over 60 contracted members in the 2015-2016 school year. The purpose of the organization is to promote Bryant Hornet Engineering on campus and well beyond through incredible projects, competition, and community involvement. The organization also works to support the day-to-day operations of our ever-growing department (that now operates on 5 separate campuses).
This organization is open exclusively to Bryant Hornet Engineering students. Our TSA chapter operates within H.E.A.T. There is a $25 annual registration fee for H.E.A.T. members that must be paid before signing a H.E.A.T. membership contract.
All competitive teams - BEST Robotics, Duct Tape Boat Racing, VEX Robotics, Electric Vehicle Rally, etc... all operate through H.E.A.T. and are made up exclusively of H.E.A.T. members.
