Principles Of Engineering
Designed for 10th or 11th grade students, this survey course exposes students to major concepts they will immediately encounter in a post-secondary engineering course of study. Topics include mechanisms, energy, statics, materials, and kinematics. They develop problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge of research and design to create solutions to various challenges, document their work and communicate solutions.
In this course, students will get to work with our massive supply of VEX equipment to design, build, and program machines of all sorts. They will have access to the most powerful computer labs in the district to write C-based code for robots, design and test bridge designs and run military projectile simulations.
We've also been known to design and build balsa bridges/towers... and massive projectile launchers you might have seen at football games back in the fall.
This is a foundational course that is required before taking specialization courses (CEA, DE, AE, EDD, etc...). Students who have not completed POE may enroll in specialty courses provided they also in enroll for POE or IED for the 2013-2014 school year.

Students that perform well in POE typically make up the backbone of our award-winning robotics team thanks to their in-depth experience with the VEX equipment, accompanying programming skills, mechanics, and engineering design know-how.
